Resident and Family Accounts

LC

Leung Chun-Wai

Son of resident — Quarry Bay

"My mother has been at Sai Lok for fourteen months now. Honestly, I was not sure at first — she had always been very independent and I worried she would find it hard to adjust. It turned out to be the opposite. She mentions Wong Ming-Ho by name every time we speak. She looks forward to the Tuesday outings. And I feel less anxious than I have in years."

Tam Fong-Yee

Resident — North Point

"I take the Complete Residence arrangement. What I appreciate most is that nobody makes me feel like a burden or a patient. I am simply a person who lives here. The food is good — proper Cantonese home cooking. I would say the WiFi in my room could be stronger, but that is a small thing."

Yip Kwok-Hing

Daughter of resident — Taikoo

"The communication from Yuk-Lin has been excellent. I live in Taikoo and cannot visit as often as I would like, but I receive a WhatsApp update every week — usually with a photo from whichever outing my father has been on. It takes away the worry of not being nearby."

Ma Hiu-Lam

Resident — North Point

"I have lived in North Point all my life. When my children suggested Sai Lok, I was glad it was nearby rather than some development in the New Territories. I still walk to the market on Java Road some mornings. Nothing has really changed about the part of Hong Kong I call home."

Chan Kwai-Ling

Niece of resident — Tin Hau

"We started with just the Daily Living Support for my aunt — she was not ready to commit to anything larger. That worked for about six months, then she quietly asked to add the excursions. She is now on the full arrangement and seems thoroughly at ease. The process of adding things was straightforward."

Lo Wai-Man

Son of resident — Wan Chai

"The pricing is exactly as described — one figure, billed monthly, no surprises. After looking at several places where the published fee turned out to be a base rate before all the extras, it was genuinely refreshing to find that Sai Lok's fee means what it says."

How Residents Find Their Pace at Sai Lok

Case — Daily Living Support

The Situation

A 74-year-old retired civil servant in North Point was managing independently but finding that small household tasks — keeping the flat tidy, collecting prescriptions, keeping track of appointments — were beginning to feel like too much on top of each other.

What Helped

His daughter arranged the Daily Living Support arrangement. A host visited three mornings a week — tidying, handling laundry and pharmacy collection. The resident directed the level of involvement; the host followed his lead.

After Six Months

The household ran more smoothly. He felt less tired by midday. His daughter, who had been calling twice daily, now calls once. He has since asked to increase the host's visits to five days a week.

"I expected to feel I had lost some independence. What I actually found is that I have more energy for the things I still want to do myself." — Resident, age 74

Case — Excursions Arrangement

The Situation

A woman in her early eighties had moved to live with her son's family in Taikoo after her husband passed. She was well and lively but found she was spending most of her days indoors, which was making her restless.

What Helped

She joined Sai Lok's Excursions arrangement, travelling in from Taikoo for the Tuesday and Thursday outings. Within a month she knew the other participants well and was suggesting destinations herself.

After Three Months

She had formed close friendships with two other regular outing participants. Her son said the change in her energy at home was noticeable from the very first week.

"I had forgotten how much I enjoy just being out in the streets. The harbour on a clear morning — I had not seen it in months." — Resident, age 82
